Preparedness

"...and a massive tsunami is racing for the city," the radio said. Victor leapt into action. He pulled a magnetic lockbox out from under the sink, and from it he pulled a thick bundle of cash and several keys. "Wilma." He tossed her a key. "Go to the chest freezer in the garage. There's a lockbox under the peas." She caught the key and stared at him.

"Alex." He tossed a key to his son. "Take the car down to the Wilcoxes. This will unlock their boathouse. Start getting their twenty-footer ready." Alex looked stunned.

"Liana." She caught a third key, followed by a sheathed knife. "There's a box under a trap door in your room. Those'll get you through the rug and the trapdoor. Get the box. I'll bust our go bags out of the drywall."

Everyone stared at him. "What?" asked Wilma.

"Emergency preparedness, Wilma! We're ready, but—"

"—that's what we'd advise if the threat were real. This has been a test of..."

"Um," Victor said. "Why don't you all... go out to dinner. And a movie. Yeah. Now, just give me those and, uh..."

Wilma rolled her eyes. "C'mon," she said, and the kids followed her out.
